Rowangchhari is located at 22.1667°N 92.3333°E . It has 3,607 households and a total area of 442.89 km².

According to the 1991 Bangladesh census, Rowangchhari had a population of 17,904. Males constituted 53.47% of the population, and females 46.53%. The population aged 18 or over was 9,753. Rowangchhari had an average literacy rate of 16.2% (7+ years), against the national average of 32.4%

Population Total 22629; male 12243, female 10386; Muslim 1926, Hindu 219, Buddhist 3766, Christian 15591 and others 1127. Indigenous communities such as chakma, marma, Murong and tripura belong to this upazila.
